McDonald’s All-American Game Open Thread

Two soon to be Tar Heels will be playing in tonight’s McDonald’s All-American game. ESPN will televise the contest beginning at 10 PM.

SG P.J. Hairston took part in the slam dunk contest and led after the first round but failed to throw down his second dunk ending up 3rd overall(behind second place Duke commit Marshall Plumlee but ahead of other Duke commit Austin Rivers.) Hairston’s three dunks are in the video below, skip to the 0:15 second mark to see them.

Hairston was also in the three point contest and led after the first round before finishing second to Kentucky commit Kyle Wiltjer. Yes, Kentucky beat UNC with the the three point shot twice in one week. While the contests mean very little(Ronald Curry won the dunk contest when he was a McDonald’s All-American) you do realize Hairston is extremely athletic and will give UNC another high flying guard alongside Dexter Strickland. Also, if he can come in and shoot the ball in the mid-30% range as a freshman it will help in a major way.

The other Tar Heel suiting up this evening is James McAdoo. McAdoo is a 6-8 power forward with a great all-around game. If UNC returns everyone, McAdoo will slip into Justin Knox’s slot and be an instant upgrade since his offensive skills are better. McAdoo is already being projected as a high lottery pick in 2012.

Open thread for anyone watching the game and dream what life might be like if everyone returns and UNC adds these two guys to the mix.

McAdoo looks like the real deal. Nice outside jumper, and can finish strong inside.

  • faustus1500

Looks like we have our outside shooter we desperately needed.

  • Woody is going to be talking a lot about Efland if he does that in Chapel Hill. Not sure how much Roy is going to like 25 foot threes but the kid apparently can hit them.

I like McAdoo’s game. Versatile enough to play anywhere on the court.

Oh and Marshall Plumlee plays exactly like his brothers. And I don’t mean that in a good way. No hands, sets screens with his feet well beyond his shoulder width, etc, etc, etc.

  • faustus1500

I have always felt that the Nike Hoop Summit was a better indicator of how a player does in college. Of course, I remember Ronald Curry being named MVP and Jason Capel scoring 22 in the 1998 McDonald’s game.

Didn’t realize McAdoo had that much range… Didn’t believe Hairston had that much range, but apparently he does. It was good to see two Tarheels do so well in a game that ESPN tried as hard as they could to turn into an Austin Rivers/Dook University Infomercial. BTW - Cody Zeller looks like he plays the same way Tyler does. I think Indiana is going to be very pleased with him.

Here’s something interesting, NBADraft.com removed Harrison Barnes from their 2011 Mock Draft: http://www.nbadraft.net/2011mock_draft

I dvr the game and just watching the game now…. I know Cody going to indiana but even his mannerisms very close to Z.
The team next season going to be so so special..PJ and McAdoo great additions and they appear to be great kids as well.. They heading to school june 12..not that far away..

I think PJ will definitley be pushing leslie and Reggie for playing time. I think McAdoo will be first man in off the bench. He can run the floor..

  • lviveiros

Did we recruit Shannon Scott at all? ( Charlie’s son) or did SOK mess that up as well…

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

    ^You read my mind…

  • Drew had nothing to do with not recruiting Scott. Marshall and either Paige or Rose were the targets. Hard to argue the logic based on what we’ve seen of KM, and the way Paige is soaring up the recruiting ranks.

Roy’s MO has been to target a PG every other year (’06: Lawson, ’08: Drew, ’10: Marshall, ’12: Paige).

  • lviveiros

In retrospect maybe potential playing time had a huge impact on Cody’s decision not to come to the hill.. ( probably knew his brother was staying till senior year..McAdoo coming in..etc.etc.. IMO )

  • ^Possible, but I think more likely is that each brother wanted to forge his own identity. Luke at ND, Tyler at UNC, now Cody at IU. If Cody ever does have a regret, I wonder if it will be that he didn’t choose Butler!

  • lviveiros

Thanks C. Michael for explanation. makes sense..I was not sure.

Tellin ya cannot wait to see McAdoo and PJ play..love their swagger and of course their basketball skills…

  • textual heeling

    ^^
Remember, too, that when Cody was being recruited in earnest by major schools, we still had the Wear twins on the roster - so it would have been hard for Cody to envision much playing time at least his first year. At Indiana he’ll basically be expected to step in and be their Tyler Hansbrough from day one.

  • lviveiros

I agree and can respect that Cody wanted to make his own mark. I was thinking the same thing in regards to Butler. I think Brad Stevens is a great young coach.
Also I can repect that any sibling or child wants to make their own mark somewhere and I think it is hard to go to same school as parent or sibling. Alot of pressure..Some kids can handle it and it does not bother them .

  • He probably should have gone to Butler. Boy, wouldn’t that had signaled a shift in power for college basketball in Indiana and established Butler with some staying power.

  • lviveiros

Curious any idea what number shirts they will be wearing in school…
I noticed McAdoohas 44 but won’t be wearing that number next season cause it is Z’s..

\I was watching the girls game last nigth John’s sister wear 31 too..
Another reason why he stays next season. his sister will be down the road at ya Dook..( guess he has to cheer for dooks girls team)

  • lviveiros

THF… I agree IMO Butler better pick then Indiana

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

Well, I still think that in some way SOK did have something to do with not recruiting Scott… after all, we just signed another PG yesterday right? So, no Drew on the roster last year and maybe we are recruiting Scott last year.

  • lviveiros

I totally cracked up laughin plumlees hidden talent shrimping..

  • faustus1500

Isn’t is weird that Cody has more pressure lumped on him by going Indiana than if he went to Butler? It wasn’t very long ago he would have been another star recruit in Bloomington. Now, he is being asked to be a savior for the Hoosiers.

  • lviveiros

Hopefully last night the boys were hanging out watching and …KM said “boys with the addition of PJ and McAdoo at the hil lsoon next year is ours”…. Another big guy running down that I can pass to…

  • OldSchool

TV commentator Jay Williams (former dookie, but an excellent analyst nevertheless) said while watching the game that if Zeller, Henson, and Barnes return next year the Heels will be his choice to win it all. This is not breaking news (lots of people are saying it), but it sure is fun to hear it!

As for the game, Hairston proved to be a fearless and effective shooter from deep (even a hiccup airball couldn’t deter him from shooting again from long range - and making it). McAdoo will be a stud for sure. He’s smart, strong, athletic, and can score in bunches. He also loves to run, run, run… just like Roy. Most important is that these two guys already love the Heels and can’t wait to join the current team.

As for scouting the dookies, I was very impressed by Omar Cook (highly talented point guard) and Austin Rivers (amazing talent at either guard position). If Kyrie Irving stays, dook will be very tough again next season, but vulnerable inside.

  • “after all, we just signed another PG yesterday right? So, no Drew on the roster last year and maybe we are recruiting Scott last year.”

Not at all comparable. White is basically insurance, with a strong possibility that next year will be his only year in Chapel Hill (Dave Telep has mentioned the idea of White going to a mid-major after his mission). Big difference between that, and recruiting a guy who would demand (in a good way) large minutes for the next 3-4 years; minutes, which for the most part, are already accounted for.

  • joemags52

very weird barnes, henson, zeller off the 2011 moch draft but on the 2012 mock draft I wonder if they know something that we don’t
    http://www.nbadraft.net/2012mock_draft

  • Just an FYI, DraftExpress.com is generally much more accurate than NBADraft.net. The latter tends to get a little “reachy,” like, for instance, having Marshall leave after two years.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

^^Ok. Good point. Doesn’t really matter too much (as long as Paige turns out to be as good as people think he will be) since I don’t subscribe to Roy’s notion that he has to have three PGs. In ’05 and ’09 I’m betting Felton and Lawson each averaged more then 30+ mpg in the NCAAT and that worked out pretty well.

  • Heel in Purple

^In 05, 08 and 09 we also had 3 PGs. It’s just that our #1 has been good enough. 05 it was Felton, but Melvin and Quentin were also there. In fact, Quentin started the 1st game cause of a suspension. In 08 we lost Bobby Frasor and then Ty went down with the ankle. If we only had 2, we would have been screwed, since Marcus would have been trying to guide us. 09 we had SOK, Ty and Bobby. Ty with the toe problem and Bobby and SOK did a decent job in ACCT and against Radford.

It’s an insurance policy. I fully expect Dexter to get the majority of backup minutes at point. But in the case of injury (knock on wood), we needed a 3rd guard to handle the ball, unless you think McDonald, Barnes or Hairston could do it?

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

^Totally understand that Stillman is only going to be there for insurance purposes and glad to have him. I just get alarmed when I hear Roy talk about needing to go 3 deep at a particular position because, frankly, he gets better results when he just plays his best players for as long as they can go (anybody remember how much playing time the Where? Twins took away from Zeller before he got injured last year… or the 5 for 5 substitutions that ground our offense to a halt earlier this year?)
