In light of recent controversies and in light of some posts I’ve seen written on this blog this season and last season, my favorite quote during the game was this: Mike Patrick: “Roy Williams didn’t win over 600 games in his career by just showing up at the gym.”
Forget Beyond the Box - the player of the game is the walk-on who took the charge.
Maybe Coach Lowe can borrow our walk-ons to make the next game a more competitive scrimmage?
How does Gonzalez not get ejected for throwing an elbow? A flagrant foul is for “conduct that is extreme in nature, or excessive or severe contact during a dead ball”! Elbowing a guy in the face is all three.
Chuck, its also Saturday at 2pm. People have things they have to do. And, maybe they weren’t real worried about this one.
I thought State would be fired up after their loss. Not so much. Only our own lapses prevented having 100 pts scored on them. State fans cannot be happy.
Wow was it nice to be on the other side of an early run. The offense looked so much looser than it has all year, save the last 10 of the first half. Good to see these guys playing great team ball and starting to click.
“but for the first time since Dec. Carolina plays good ball from start to finish.”
I’m very happy with the win, with Barnes’ breakout performance , and with good all around efforts. But I’m still a little suspect of good start-to-finish ball, at least offensively.
Not taking anything away from the Heels, but State was terrible in the first half with an OE of 52……52! Give UNC credit for excellent rebounding and some pretty good D, but I had their first half OE at 85. (Not that good) Fortunately the second half OE was much better, with the game total ending up a little above their season avg.
Considering the first half offensive ups and downs, and adding to that the 10 TO’s, they’re likely right back in a tight situation against a better team. (To be fair, I am making an assumption they’re not going to dominate better teams, on the boards, the way they did State) So I’m not ready to concede an entire game of offensive consistency quite yet in ACC play.
But hey, they did what they were supposed to do, and got a big boost of confidence and satisfaction in the process, with smiles all around. What more could you ask for?
the “I’m a Tar Heel” video is awesome, but why no Sam Perkins?…and Michael, despite your “no introduction needed”, James is STILL the man!
If Sid wants to save his job, he’ll make Lo Brown his starting pg.
Buffy & Bif in front of us need to clap more and stand/pose less!
Dexter is fearless inside-if he ever becomes a good finisher we’ve really got something.
Barnes reminds me of Paul Pierce because he is a bit foot-slow, but if it hasn’t hampered PP’s game, then HB oughta be fine when he learns how to use his body to shield. Kid gets winded faster than most. Not sure what’s going on there.
I will say this. UNC seems to have a knack to make our opponents look terrible too. This is a whole different thing from the technically beautiful teams from 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.
One thing about winning ugly is that the upside seems to be high. UNC is a tall team, particularly with Marshall and Bullock on the court and we create match-up problems. If we can ever learn to shoot, watch out.
Marshall, Strickland, Drew, Bullock, and McDonald combined for 6 of 24 FG shooting. Just a little help from these guys will go a long way to balance a solid frontcourt.
Henson, Zeller, Knox, and Barnes were a combined 23 of 35 for 66% in 2 pointers, and, added to Barnes’ long-range shots, accounted for 65 points. (Including FT’s) Most excellent.
Wouldn’t it be great is we could play NC State 3 or even 4 times a year? LOL To be honest they remind me of a poor man’s version of our team, good front court but nobody to get it to them and nobody to shoot it from outside consistently or who can handle the ball and passing. They seem to have the same kinds of problems with standing around without the basketball, poor spacing and blocking out as well. Additionally they are also a young team. All this leads me to the conclusion that while watching today’s game was a welcome change of pace from the usual ugly ball nail biters this year, I won’t go hanging my hat on it just yet.
Barnes finally had a break out game. Was it cause he had home town people in the audience, because of the pitiful effort State put forth or because he is finally starting to loosen up some? Who knows but I won’t object to his former teachers showing up from Iowa in the future if the results are the same as today. Henson looked great in all facets except free throw shooting of course. At least I didn’t see him air ball any of them. Knox had an excellent game, Tyler continues to under perform. Strickland followed up one good game with another. Marshall continued his struggles 4 TOs v/s 3 assist does not look good on the state sheet. Drew continues to look good off the bench (maybe the start PG position is cursed now). TOs were horrible in the first half but much improved in the second half. Rebounding was outstanding but it should be way State stood around looking at each other today. Free throw shooting back slid, FG % backslid as well. And assist numbers were anemic at best for this point total. This team isn’t firing on all cylinders but they are certainly dangerous and not a team anybody wants to face or can count as easy out. And that is a big improvement over last year.
^ Yea, KMarsh looked like a freshman & had some blunders, BUT…As pleasant as it is to see Drew being a competent backup, he still can’t run the offense effectively. Marshall can & does — most of the time, at least. He’s still on a steep learning curve, but he has so much potential upside that it’s fun to watch him grow — & even make some mistakes we know he wont be making by the end of the year. Watching Drew as a starter was painful because he WASN’T improving.
The thing about Barnes is that his shots tonight were basically the same as they have been, except they went in. The other difference is he looked much more comfortable taking them, and he played with purpose. Let’s hope that he has finally found his groove, but I’m going to need more proof.
State fans really should be embarrassed with their team. Blue Steel competed harder than State’s starters. I feel done for Sidney but he recruited these guys and most of then laid down on him today.
Lot to love out of this game. If we have to nit-pick, it was letting State stay in the game. Carolina should have been up by 30 at half. But, I’m not going to worry. Alot to build on from today.

I was at the game. It was amazing. I would like to say I saw someone I didn’t expect to see. Damion Grant. I saw Damion Grant.

Excellent results. Good win.

Mom called me at the end of the game. Hilarious voicemail. http://chirb.it/1zH9z5 Blue Steel mom!

I think Harrison Barnes’ woes have been a combination of his not playing as well as expected, together with bad shooting luck.
Regression to the mean is hopefully to be expected. Now, if he can just cut down on the turnovers…..
Glad to see Barnes smiling. I was beginning to think he was a robot.
That Strickland steal & slam was epic.
