At 1:22 left in the game Grant drives in and gets fouled by Strickland. Strickland looks at the official perplexed by the call. I rewind, and alas, I see no contact at all. This call could have easily been a three point play due to the fact that it wasn’t even a foul, and he had a clear shot at the rim. I hate calls like that where the defender is behind the guy, can’t obstruct the shot at all, and still gets the foul call with no chance to disrupt the shot attempt. Him missing that was big, otherwise Miami is up 3 instead of tied. Also, if you rewind your dvr recorder on that, the other two officials looked surprised at the call as well.
Really thought we were going to lose when on back to back possessions we have Reggie try a runner and LMAC with a quick jumper. TERRIBLE shot selection and with a ton of time on shot clock each time.
However, Barnes bailed us out. Marshall’s pass was lucky cause he got caught in the air. Zeller really needs to take some lessons from Reggie Johnson and Hansbrough and all true MEN in the lane.
Me and my friend agree that if we were 7ft tall, we would be destroying people on the block. Blake Griffin style.
CM…Of course it was a joke. It just doesn’t need to be said. Roy Williams is not funny but he thinks he’s hilarious. Bad jokes that are delivered with terrible timing make the joke teller look silly, and inevitably turn all the attention to said teller.
My takeaway from this game is that Zeller seems to be regressing each game. He really doesn’t provide a 7 ftr’s presence. Can’t explain why he seems to be getting pushed around more and more since the UK game which was his zenith.
Nice win. 2 Road wins in the ACC. I’ll take it. I really worry though that no more than 3 ACC teams get in this year. Its imperative that we be one of those 3. If we’re tied for 3, I think that’s OK given the fact that our losses, outside of GT, will have been to quality teams, and we can clamor to the KY win.
It just baffles me that we don’t get the open court calls like the supposed strip that Drew was fortunate enough to hang onto, yet Kendall gets the foul called on him on a takeaway. I tell you, there are other ACC teams with guards that will get that call everytime, but not Drew. I guess we got by with some rugged defense at times, and maybe we dodged a few foul calls, but I really don’t see it. We got 3 fouls called on us tonight for just following close to the guard as they penetrated the paint from the outside. I don’t see us getting that call our way on offense very often. We do, but not as frequently as those that we guard. End Rant
“I’m not a huge fan of offense/defense for the point guard position. you need your point guard in rhythm, not thinking “um, I’m not supposed to be in right now” in a critical moment.”
Totally agreed Nathan. I have yet to see much benefit from the “offense/defense substitutions”, other than getting our point guards out of rhythm. Drew had a great game, but is he THAT far ahead of Marshall defensively that we can’t risk having Marshall in at the end of a game? Considering that Marshall has shown to be a very clutch point guard in crunch time, I cringe each time Roy pulls him for Drew’s “defense.” Thoughts?
Some signs of life from the perimeter, excellent FT shooting, and only 3 second half TO’s. Hats off to Larry Drew with 5 assists and zero TO’s, and some solid D from him and Bullock. (I am going to have to go back and watch the game again to see how many of Miami’s 3′s were that easy or not)
Gritty road win against a very determined Miami team. I actually feel bad for them getting so close, so many times, but let them get back on track against someone else.
And I’ll repeat a thought I commented on few threads ago: Harrison Barnes appears to have much more confidence in himself than some do in him. Hopefully he will have converted everyone by the end of the season.
^^ I’ve never liked it either. I still don’t see enough of a difference in the two pg’s defense to warrant this musical chair pattern. You said it perfectly…”I’m not supposed to be in right now…” That certainly plays on the mind of whoever is thinking it. I prefer continuity.
^Yeah I’d go straight Marshall at end of games. He’s earned it and Drew has played so much better with the pressure off of him. Drew is not a “set the tone” kind of guy, but if he comes in and the game is flowing his strengths shine. Hopefully Roy keeps solidifying the lineup so that by NCAA tourney time (knock on wood) we are straight Marshall last 4 minutes. I am ok with zeller/henson offense/defense though.
For once I didn’t comment during the game although I was as frustrated as the rest of you. I just had this feeling-for once-that Miami couldn’t keep making all those 3s.
Bullock needs to slide into the starting line-up and Barnes move to the 4 or come off the bench. Watts sits. Barnes is clutch but the kid is such an enigma. I really think he thinks way too much on the court.
^ Zeller befuddles me. I expected him to emerge as the toughest, most physical player we had. He looks to be getting softer every game and it is painful to watch him try to figure out what to do with the ball when he gets it on the block and the double comes. The few times that he has looked confident catching and taking the jump hook usually involved a pretty weak defender on him. He is becoming a target for more physical guys to push him around.
^^ ??? Marcus and CBF, he nailed it? LOL. What games have either of you been watching? Zeller has ALWAYS been a finesse player, unless going against guys 3-4 inches shorter, so I’m not sure how you expected him to become physical out of nowhere. He prefers finesse baseline moves, face up jumpers, and running the floor when he can. He has also proven to be very fragile in his career, as well. News flash, THESE aren’t traits characteristic of anything resembling something of a Hansbrough clone, which is what you want him to be, but he will never be that, unfortunately. McAdoo won’t be that type of player next year, either. Justin Knox is the most physical player on the team.
marcus, i’ll defend your position on this b/c Zeller played extremely physical & aggressive throughout the nit run last year.
also, i know fishsticks commented on it on air, but UNC’s ball & head fakes along with ball movement were outstanding during that first half run. But I disagree that this is “classic Carolina.” I’ve actually commented on here before that, with our athleticism, wish we’d replicate the dookies with more pump fakes. Feel sometimes like with Roy wanting to go faster — actually discourages hesitations and pump fakes.
If we could get harrison to be half as aggressive as reggie we might put a few more point on the board. At the end of the game the ball belongs in the hands of #41 he has many bright days to come in that navy and carolina blue.
drdave…didn’t you post something the other day about how Ed Davis would lead this team to the final four if he hadn’t left? And if you want to use Zeller and finesse in the same sentence, then be my guest. I don’t have any fantasies about him becoming a Hansbrough clone. I’d just like to see him play the post like a 7 footer instead of a scared 6′-4″ guy.
You are honestly comparing Zeller to Davis? Davis may not be a banger, but he is much more highly skilled than Zeller, has a greater wingspan, and number 2 he was a much bigger defensive presence. If you disagree with me, tell me if Zeller would have a prayer of blocking 5 shots in an NBA game, as Ed did just a few. You can accuse Ed of being alot of different things but not like a 6’4 scared guy as you have pegged Zeller.
That pass from marshall was perfect….just low enough to make the defender think he could get it with perfect placement for Harrison.
great win!
“Real nice Roy. “…I coulda made that shot…” (Barnes last 3-pointer). And the egomania rages on.”
Lighten up, it’s called a joke. Not everything needs to be (or should be) taken seriously.
a shorter rotation and barnes at the 4 works. sorry watts, but you shouldn’t play unless someone is hurt.

if zeller were half as mean as me he’d be unstoppable.
dude drives me crazy playing soft like that.
calling marshalls pass lucky would be ok if he hadnt made passes like that before……and you know the answer to that dontcha

Zeller is soft. No point sugar coating it.

we needed this one and the next one against State, cuz after that is a tough stretch. @BC, FSU, @Duke, @clemson.
