I will kick the game thread off a tad early as there is other ACC action to be seen if you are so inclined. UNC’s next two opponents Florida St and Virginia Tech square off at 7:00 PM on ESPNU. The Heels follow against Miami at 9:00 PM on the ACC Network which is just a clever way of rebranding Raycom Sports. The full affiliate list is here or you can use ESPN3 if you are so inclined.
And for fun, here is the last time UNC met Miami.
Comments if you have ‘em.
If you live in the ACC area, ESPN3 will be blacked out and you have to use http://www.theacc.com/live/ instead.
Rebound & make free throws, and all will be fine
Good to know Greenville/New Bern wasn’t included in basic cable package. I love me some Zooey Deschanel, but come on.
Johnson’s already winded.
he huffs and he puffs.
also: my companion for the game tonight:
Old-fashioned made with Wild Turkey Rye 101.
yay.
loving the defensive intensity now.
obviously, they read my posts from after the BC game.
obviously.
SHOT SELECTION.
for real.
Also: if the U continues to average 1 made three every 8 minutes of game play, I’m happy with that ratio.
Stevie Wonder thought that was a bad pass by Hairston.
momentum…slipping.
Air ball & TO, nice pj
shoot when youre squared up, or dont shoot.
dang.
2012 continuing to treat Hairson rough.
snap out of it now, young sir.
Hairston has been awful
People’s Exhibit A why PJ isn’t a pro yet… Take a dribble.
you werent open to shoot, Z.
cmon, guys.
The jump ball continues to be the single worst rule in college basketball.
it’s a reach in foul, properly, 96% of the time, and a cowardly call by those refs.
Also: someone lit a fire under Dex’s ass tonight and I like it.
Miami: ugliest unis in the league?
When God? When will our players learn to slam the ball? Ya got the ball 36″ from the basket- JUST DO IT!
That is foul after the mugging fat boy has been allowed to get away with?
Clemson’s orange is bad. So is their play.
Sidenote: THF, if Dequean Cook is on Miami, that would be a problem since he is also on the Thunder. Jones is the guy I think you’re thinking/typing of.
Thank You Henson for that SLAM!!!
nice.
how is THAT not a foul!?!?
Strrrrrickland.
The shots aren’t falling tonight, which I can take, but I’m real glad to see a sense of urgency from the guys.
I even just saw Zeller fight two guys for a rebound!
get some, Z!
Z..dude. your hand has to be what….9’9″ high in the air?
OVER the rim, my man. OVER the rim.
Finish
Lazy henson, box out
33%.
Barnes, Zeller and Henson 4/21.
who says he cant score?
ugh. straight up, John. thats an easy assist you finessed down the toilet.
Marshall looks like he was reading threads on THF or something.
seems like some great energy in the building tonight.
If Henson had nailed that jam, the roof would have come off.
The guys are still learning about momentum…the difference between having it and seizing it.
getting there, we hope.
now is the time to end the half with a BOOT ON THROAT run to kill their will!!
like that!
Thanks Henson for the SLAM!
Great pass z
great intensity of play all around tonight.
the shots will eventually fall, especially #40…
otherwise, great effort!
night and day from the BC game…
Good d, rebounding, & free throw shooting, that is what you have to do when you can’t throw it in the ocean from 5ft.
Yeah for Woody!!!!!!!!!!
love me some Woody Durham.
congrats on honoring him by renaming press box. thats fantastic.
Great to see Woody honored at the half. Thinking of how many hours I’ve spent with Woody over the years. Miss ya old buddy!
Start the 2nd like you finished the 1st
Zeller SLAM!!
Kendall sticking to his man.
Like this, keep it up
Strick has been awesome
more amazingly is to be playing this relatively well (other than FG shooting) and Barnes is absolutely absent.
the bigs have decided Butta will not be getting any assists.
seriously, fellas. he’s giving you the ball in scoring position.
Justin Watts, you can only hope to contain him.
Watts ugh
McAdoo! makes a layup!
and here it goes again:
not any grasp of when to apply the gas and killer instinct.
Idiotic passes and idiotic turnovers and Justin Watts seeing the court.
recipe for letting the U back in the game.
I hope this does not come to pass any more.
are you kidding me. the ball will not go in for the assist.
someone imported the rims from the 1997 Final Four.
Why does everyone think they need to throw Randy Johnson-style passes to awkward freshmen?*
*this includes Watts
A few minutes ago, I threatened to moon the entire neighborhood if Watts made both free throws.
My pants are still securely on.
That offer stands for the remainder of the season. Not too concerned.
Barnes, Zeller, Henson and Hairston: 8/34.
Mous, do you really think the intensity is waning significantly? I might agree in the BC game but our Def intensity has been pretty high and we’re getting good looks - but between Henson, Hairston, & Barnes, just can’t get anything to fall.
KM playing like he is on a mission…. Bullock is playing his a** off,…
GO HEELS!!!
great D, Hubert.
Hubert has Byron sanders hands
geez. then he gets wrapped around for a 15-yd pass interference…nothing called.
wake up, ref.
finally
we seriously have the worst put-back layup makers in America.
square. up.
50% no more from 3
Strick Rolled
maybe a spurt will get Butta to 8 assists. he could have 14.
some awful shooting.
luckily, some great D.
Strick & bullock have ate grant up on d
backcourt scoring 22-10.
in favor of UNC.
*blink…blink blink*
*facepalm*
Z…
2010 hb tonight
Henson clearly wants to be player of the game again.
^^i’d be less annoyed if he’d RECOGNIZE the J isnt falling. quit
compounding things by putting up 6 3s.
Dex best game of the year
odd game tonight…
Really loving the defensive effort tonight.
This guard play is the best I’ve seen in 3 years…even more amazing is how sub-par the frontcourt and overall FG shooting are, not to mention Barnes playing worse than he has since he arrived.
Great D and inspired guard play.
its not make it take it, tubby. let the ball drop.
Fat boy being a jackass
Htte i’m in tears after that one
i hope Johnson doesnt think he’s playing in the NBA.
This was a great “TEAM” win…. Strickland should be POG…. on to Fla.St.
Croooooouch!
Vaseline not go for the hands Hubert
HB should be highly motivated Sat.
halfway through this week’s Fla thug gauntlet…so far, so good.
a win, no injuries.
42 pts…for a guy averaging 12.
OSU goes down.
Sparty hasnt lost since going 0-2. look out.
I like that Roy clearly made an effort to get Hubert minutes today. Considering that he’s probably going to be starting next year, he’ll need all of them that he can get.
Strickland had an amazing game. I know he isn’t particularly flashy because he doesn’t shoot 3′s, but good lord does he always show up to play. He’s clearly learning to pass a bit like Marshal, and his defensive presence rivals that of Henson (in my opinion at least.)
The 3′s didn’t drop, but I saw what I wanted to see in terms of intensity of effort and Roy getting Hubert some minutes.
Barnes will be back next year.
1. The most consistent defensive intensity I’ve seen from them. Really nice to watch.
2. It’s way too late in HB’s career for him to have a game like this. No more excuses. Either show up all the time for every game, or become the second coming of Jawad Williams. Williams was a good player, but no one thought of him as an All America. Unless HB picks it up big time, no one will think of him as one either.
3. Some of us have been saying how much more awesome this team would be if our guards drove to the basket. Tonight, that proposition became undeniable.
4. When Marshall actually scores, other teams have nowhere to hide. They can’t sag inside, and that is our route, in the long run, to winning it all.
5. What a super game by Mr. Unheralded, Dexter Strickland! Our superstar didn’t show up, and Stickland and Marshall bailed us out. Three loud cheers for them. And if they can do it once, they can do it again.
6. Henson regressed at least one year for the first 32 minutes. Come March and April, such regression will be fatal.
7. Zeller had another solid game, trying and largely succeeding against a guy who must outweigh him by 50 pounds.
8. I come back to the sustained defensive intensity. That was absolutely the big plus to take away from this game.
HTTE, what is the deal with the FSU/Miami connection? Talk about thug gauntlet, they look like they’re trying to “keep it real” street style.
Dexter Strickland may go down as one of my favorite TarHeels. This guy sticks with his man like he is a human lifeshield. His offense has become so good, I’ve thrown away all my thoughts of possibly starting Bullock. And speaking of Bullock, I love his intensity. He has really improved on his defense, keeping his man in front of him, and playing the passing lanes.
Kendall Marshall, taking it to the rack. What can I say? We are absolutely unstoppable if Kendall can keep doing that while keeping a keen eye on open teammates. Kendall has also significantly become better at staying in front of his man on the second dribble. He may get crossed over, but he steps back in time to keep them from getting a good scoring/passing angle.
Back to Strickland. Its one thing to play great man defense. Its another to play the passing lanes and get steals. To be able to do them both is something of greatness. He does both very well!!!
I don’t know about you guys, but this game was absolutely the best I have seen in quite a while in the ACC. As far as Im concerned, the concerns I had about our ability to play on the ball defense, stay with the man on the pick n rolls, and get out to the shooter have been put to rest with this. I thought those concerns might be what haunt us at some point, but as for now, we are taking care of that front.
Rath, if we can play defense like this game to game, wow is all I can say. BC was good defense, acceptable for UNC standards. This game was terrific, and exceeded my expectations, and what I thought we would ever see out of this team.
Only bench scoring and Barnes having an off night were bad in this game. Defense really was good. Not just Dex, Z and Henson but Bullock and Marshall too. Marshall’s next step is to score with his right hand like he can with his left. If Des ever finds a 3 shot, he is so good at playing to the situation,; very unselfish. Barnes just didn’t find the rim. I happens. Bullock and Hairston need the time to get consistent. I really like seeing Hubert and Macadoo getting time. They’ll put it together.
JBowling -
Amen!
Strickland’s been my favorite player ever since the 2010 season. He might have missed half his layups while flying out of bounds completely out of control, but I knew that when he was on the court that at least one person was going to give it absolutely everything they had.
Frankly, in the most important ways, I’d say Strickland hasn’t changed at all over the last three years. (That’s a compliment, if you weren’t sure.)
^^dont know what that means, JB!
they are two teams that seem to have spent the last 10 years putting players that dont have basketball skills on the floor. and when you dont have basketball skills, you resort to knocking people around.
and lookie there, one is an NFL football player now.
how bout this from the ACC.com…
so far, Miami’s home attendance average is… 3500.
That’s pretty much what Im getting at HTTE! Very similar to tactics Duke employs, but aren’t as crafty at it.
Byron Sanders…. Good reference….
I guess Marshall saw a few openings tonight.
Strickland was a force as well. Against a preseason all ACC guard no less.
They started the game with a lot of effort on defense and kept it up. That is absolutely key this season and they have to realize it has really been the key.
Quite a few transition baskets were made through the Miami defense. Almost like they weren’t into defending this.
But Kudos to the guys who stepped up.
