Wow…Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Dook will OBLITERATE us. If we’re losing to also-rans and academically ineligible transfers from PAC-12 schools we’re awful.
Starters look tired, perhaps, but we certainly don’t suck. The second string looks much fresher. A win is still more than doable. I don’t want to lose, but games like this early in the season are ok with me. UNLV is a good team, experienced, basically playing at home, and playing a tired team that looks a little unfocused. The circumstances are not in our favor.
I know it is early in the year, UNLV is playing a little thuggish, so on and so forth…but this offense can have some real bad and long lapses. Can’t his offense really run out 6 straight in the tourney? All I can do is hope and pray.
I’ve watched hoops for a loooong time, but rarely have I een officiating this sh***y. Having said that, these boys just bitch slapped our team. I despise K, but I can’t imagine he would allow such turd play by “the thoroughbreds”. Wonder what Tim Conway will say about this in the presser?
I’m gonna say it. We have both the most underrated and overrated players in the game in Strickland and Barnes, respectively. Barnes is awful and I’d take Strickland in the draft over that joke 10 times over. Barnes’ only asset is his inflated reputation. He draws a little attention from the rest of the team, that’s it. And all these Barnes-bot fan boys are pathetic puppets of media hype.
thing is, if you’re deep and the other guys are bad from the line, fouling works. commit twice as many, you’ll get called for 33% more: refs consistently try to balance things out.
if Roy had some assistant coach wake Henson and Zeller with a bucket of cold water and a mouthful of curses every morning….well, I wouldn’t condone such behavior-but if it made them play a little angry….
It’s just one game, but one disturbing trend this season is rebounding. Why is the premier frontcourt in the nation getting out rebounded by South Carolina and UNLV?
Terrible officiating. Poor FT shooting. And UNLV will likely not make that many lucky shots in all the rest of their games combined. I’m more annoyed at being outrebounded.
We have some guys who hate losing, you can tell. Wisconsin is probably more irritated by this loss than we are.
WWE…..oops NCAA. there are going to be games where ref swallow whistles and our bigs get exposed for not being physical. Roy put in pj,reg, mac,km,henson and we recovered. then starters came back and same result…..got out wrestled. I hate these kind of games cause its soooooo predictable.
I agree with greg there. This was a playground game the way it was called early.
I’m not at all worried. The 09 team lost games.
The guys know the season has really started now. Zeller and Henson can hit the boards or there are players on the bench who would love the minutes.
THF is officially censoring his site, including people who have donated time and articles, for free. Good that this was a de facto away game now. Good to get this out of the way, assuming UNC responds. Someone posted that things were getting ugly on the floor after the buzzer, but I hope they just meant obnoxious fans.
Simple formula for beating UNC:
1. Be physical with their inside guys (Zeller and Henson especially)
2. Hack-a-shack the team when shooting. No need to worry about free points while the clock doesn’t move.
3. Challenge Marshall when running your offense. This is the only area where SOK would be missed if he had a better attitude.
4. Shoots lots and lots and lots of threes. UNC will simply never play outside shooters in a modern way so long as Roy is head coach. Collapsing in the classic drive and dish or pass and dish outside a la Duke, works pretty consistently to get your shooters open. Theoretically, this is what UNC does with it’s offense too, so I’m not sure and it frustrates me that they still play D like it’s 1985.
Henson regressed this weekend, Zeller either was neutered or just lost his aggressiveness, and Barnes kind of just is blending in again. Dex looked good. Marshall looked pretty good, Hairston looked pretty good. Bullock and McAdoo were quiet. Hopefuuly this and a long flight home with some rest will get them focused more.
one thing we learned is that pj and james michael show up to ball. Those two kept fighting, so did reggie and dex. the rest sometimes get complacent and buy into their hype. Also KM got so out of his game, shooting deep threes, taking contested layups. good lord it was ugly but macadoo and hairston showed some grit, especially hairston who was banging with unlv’s more aggressive thugs
Maybe we should all go to bed, because I feel like I was called out on the free throw shooting point, and assured that it would not be an issue, and my point is that normally, someone so well versed in statistics as C. Michael would not have put something like that online and then attempted to defend it.
Anyway, what difference does it make? UConn lost a bunch last year. We either will find some shooters, or we won’t, but if the writers themselves are gun-shy on here, then there are plenty of places to be frank, without attacking players, as no one has, or writing off the season.
Don’t play the censorship card with me. This is a privately run site and I have discretion to remove comments if I feel they are out of bounds. I felt this was. You don’t like it feel free to not come back. As for any articles you have written for this blog I will be glad to remove them if you’d like.
I can’t remember the last time we played a game at this pace and lost. If you’d told me that UNLV scored 90, then I would have guessed that we scored at least 100. We just looked slow out there-a half step behind all the plays. Falcon looked like he was trying to “guide” all his shots in the first 3/4 of the game before he played more aggressively/intuitively the last 10 min.
Guess I won’t be able to buy my LV Invitational Championship t-shirt, but I believe Coach will be able to do a lot of teaching the next couple of days.
you can email me about that if you want. I am here on a friendly dialog. How often have we heard: “great prediction, THF”, after a game was called right in an article just before a win. If people can puff up the writers, but not point out when they are wrong, then, hmmm.
I don’t think this is an important loss, but free throw shooting and outside shooting are obvious issues. Why should someone claim they are not? Anyway, I will follow your advice and sign off for tonight.
You can’t make the point without calling C.Michael out specifically? That was my beef and I wasn’t the only one who thought so, see scl11′s comment calling it a “low blow.”
Aaaaaaaanyhoo… so apparently a couple of obnoxious fans kind of grabbed/bumped Roy. They got cuffed while Roy had to be restrained. Everyone is OK.
Players are saying they not only didn’t guard very well, but Marshall at least said they panicked a bit. That would xplain the poor possession times and shot selection, (and rebounding I think. I noticed layers kind of caught flat-footed both guarding and after the shot). It felt more like the 2010 team than the 2011 team a bit. These guys learn fast though. I don’t think this qualified as a true panic as much as a bit of shock.
A few observations:
1-Hairston can flat out ball, and you can tell he’s been pushing Strickland. Not only can PJ shoot, he can take it to the rack, he plays excellent defense, and is athletic as Barnes. Really excited about Hairston’s future.
2-I’m impressed with McAdoo as well. McAdoo is a lot quicker than I originally thought. And I questioned some of his shot selection and I wish he were a little more physical, but he’s also going to be a beast.
3-I didn’t see anything negative about Barnes’ performance this weekend. I sprained my ankle pretty badly about a year ago, so I know how much an ankle injury sucks when you play basketball. Still, I think he’s picked up where he left off from last year.
4-Henson and Zeller MUST toughen up. I know SCAR and UNLV decided to turn these two games into a little bit of a slugfest, but they’re going to have to find a way to deal with it. Zeller has a tendency to get rattles easily, and if you’re nit going to be all too physical, then you better hit your free throws. He’s not even doing that. Henson’s hands concern me. I feel like if he’s moving and a pass comes his way, then there’s no telling if he’s going to catch it or if it bounces off his hands and goes in the third row.
5-Regardless of UNLV’s style of play and experience, this should have been a win. I know that they hit like 13 three’s, but most of them weren’t even contested. Roy’s teams have ways been pretty bad at the dribble drive and coming off of screens, but it seemed like the shooters were in a different area code than the nearest UNC defender.
6-I shouldn’t have said “we suck.”. I apologize for that remark.
Its really hard to watch this
#1 goin down I’m afraid…
Put PJ in and Jmm take Kendall and Strick out
Put PJ in and Jmm take Kendall and Zeller out
Wow…Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Dook will OBLITERATE us. If we’re losing to also-rans and academically ineligible transfers from PAC-12 schools we’re awful.
Andy..Your posts are really getting tired.
Why are the only players to do anything, hairston & bullock, not in the game?
Starters look tired, perhaps, but we certainly don’t suck. The second string looks much fresher. A win is still more than doable. I don’t want to lose, but games like this early in the season are ok with me. UNLV is a good team, experienced, basically playing at home, and playing a tired team that looks a little unfocused. The circumstances are not in our favor.
They are bumping Marshall and making him work every time he brings the ball up. It’s starting to wear him down.
Then, Marcus, you can either ignore me, debate me, or if you’re that tired, go to sleep.
Can’t make freethrows
As of 7 minutes to go, Heels deserve to lose. Soft and playing dumb.
Ok, Bullock and Hairston in. Let’s see how it goes.
I wish Barnes would sit…..those ankle injuries suck, and take forever to recover from if not healed properly.
Wow…looks a little like last year.
Give the ball to some body who gonna do something with it. BARNES
Andy…I choose not to debate ignorance.
In the bonus and shoot jumpshots brillant
13 three’s off of the same plays. Screen/dribble drive, wide open shooter. Surprised yet?
Barnes does not look like the ankle is hurting. A least he has an excuse for being tentative.
Marshalls inability to stay in front of the PG is hurting them
Their best guy, Moser, is a UCLA transfer…..meanwhile, UCLA brings the Wears. Fail.
Wow….UNLV’s been clubbing us all game and you’re calling Henson for THAT?
BARNES AND PJ playing hero ball. And everybody else standing and watching
Can’t defend, rebound, and shoot jumpers while in the bonus, deserve to lose and hope they lose by 20 to hammer home the point
Sorry Marcus….I’ll just put on rose colored glasses before I comment from here on out.
LOL nick.
I know it is early in the year, UNLV is playing a little thuggish, so on and so forth…but this offense can have some real bad and long lapses. Can’t his offense really run out 6 straight in the tourney? All I can do is hope and pray.

Barnes got ice in his veins
I’m gonna say it. We have both the most underrated and overrated players in the game in Strickland and Barnes, respectively. Barnes is awful and I’d take Strickland in the draft over that joke 10 times over. Barnes’ only asset is his inflated reputation. He draws a little attention from the rest of the team, that’s it. PG has to be able to guard the ball to play help defense, Marshall can’t so roy has to rethink strategy
thing is, if you’re deep and the other guys are bad from the line, fouling works. commit twice as many, you’ll get called for 33% more: refs consistently try to balance things out.
that rebound Henson failed to claim was the ballgame. getting whipped on the glass: we could use a chunky 6’7″ dude who lives to rebound….
Roy Williams signature coaching strategy: grumpy face.
Klutch3 are u a troll Strickland over Barnes are u dumb
Damn I love strickland’s game…..might be too late to get a win, but it’s nice to see him play within himself.
Get a freakin board!
95% of the posts on this thread are embarrassingly stupid … of course, 90% or the posts are also made by only 2 or 3 people …
Where are we on the boards?
scl, that’s exactly right…….our roster could play the hell out of a Boeheim-type zone, but hell will freeze over before we see it…
Freethrows kill this team
that would require some coaching nick
“Strickland over Barnes in the draft”…that may be the funniest thing I’ve read tonight.
KM riding the pine down the stretch.
Strick will dominate some day in the NBA. Barnes will be following the euro exchange rate by 2014.
Barnes is FAR from awful….FAR from it.
Henson and Z have to play stronger…that is a familiar comment.
Good loss, attitude adjustment was needed
don’t know who you are klutch but I do know you’re FOS
Ok, I’m going to make a very bold prediction right now. UNLV. Sweet 16 this year. Someone offer to pay me $100 bucks if I’m right.
Barnes has taken over
Free throws are officially a major problem
Criticizing Barnes? Good grief that’s ignorant.
By the way, free throws will cost us a few games this year.
^Yep
Klutch I can only hope ur trolling please leave
As bad as it is, if they had hit their FTs, this would have been a W.
here’s a novel idea: if the refs won’t call the shoulder-shove as your pg is trying to bring the ball down, set a Statue-pick!
No doubt next week’s schedule, after this very poor performance, will show what this team is made of.
Anyone have a line on FT’s for the game?
All shot 78% free throws in practice my ass
Don’t worry well be back to number 1 by next Monday
if Roy had some assistant coach wake Henson and Zeller with a bucket of cold water and a mouthful of curses every morning….well, I wouldn’t condone such behavior-but if it made them play a little angry….
20/33 is the line ESPN scorecenter is giving right now.
Strange…
The text machine is a-buzzing with Dookies as #1..lol
Even a blind dog finds a bone…
Nice william, low blow but point made
Playing 100% man to man defense when your PG can’t guard the ball is another major problem
gotta hear what Deputy Dawg has to say on this one..
It’s just one game, but one disturbing trend this season is rebounding. Why is the premier frontcourt in the nation getting out rebounded by South Carolina and UNLV?
I am going to suggest something. It’s late and people are pissed so might be best to just walk away before I end up banning someone.
Terrible officiating. Poor FT shooting. And UNLV will likely not make that many lucky shots in all the rest of their games combined. I’m more annoyed at being outrebounded.
We have some guys who hate losing, you can tell. Wisconsin is probably more irritated by this loss than we are.
Definitely a wake up call. I bet they listen to players from 2009 and 2005 a little differently.
Is there really a such thing as a good loss, though?
The FT shooting was not good, but if they shoot 80% from the line they still lose.
Getting killed on the boards and giving up 3′s is what really did it.
Issues with:
Free Throws
Rebounding
Guarding the ball & pick/roll
Is this November 2011 or 2010?
md, I think it’s mainly due to getting out-muscled, but it seems like Henson and Zeller are out of position a lot.
unbelievable. honestly can’t believe we lost. live and breathe carolina boys let’s pick ourselves up and get a win in rupp and were back #1.
Yes LarryS, and our offense put very little pressure on UNLV.
I’ve been worried about this team since we gave up 13 offensive rebounds to UNC Pembroke in the first half of the first exhibition game of the season.
I wonder if Roy will bring back the outdoor workouts like last year?
I agree with greg there. This was a playground game the way it was called early.
I’m not at all worried. The 09 team lost games.

We got out played tonight , it happens.
NO worries. Its November 2011,not March 2012
I respect both of your opinions. SCl11 has added more to this site than anyone, so I apologize for being out of line.
