Ryan Houston will get the start at tailback despite not seeing much contact during training camp but I imagine we will see quite a bit of Gio Bernard who has impressed so far in practice. Erik Highsmith will get the start opposite Dwight Jones and should have his chances with a fair amount of attention being paid to the other side of the field. Obviously Bryn Renner will get the start at QB. Devon Ramsey, back from NCAA death, will start at fullback. Nelson Hurst is the tight end and in John Shoop’s offense, the tight end is possibly the most important receiver on the field.
On defense, you quarterback killing defensive line will be Quinton Coples, Tydreke Powell, Donte Paige-Moss and highly touted Sylvester Williams. Senior Ebele Okakpu will get the start at “Sam” linebacker beside expected starters Kevin reddick and Zach Brown. The secondary will be the most watched unit on the team considering the perceived weaknesses there. Charles Brown is not listed because he still has to serve a one game suspension for $86 in improper benefits despite missing all of last season. Apparently the word “concurrent sentence” are not in the NCAA handbook. Speaking of the NCAA scandal, Jonathan Smith and Brian Gupton are listed at strong safety which is interesting since both sat out last year because of honor court penalties.
Nothing special about special teams. Casey Barth will kick and the return men are likely not going to scare anyone.
Barth, Reddick and Cam Holland have been named team captains.
Go Heels!
As far as the defense goes, getting Brown (and eventually Price) back on the field will be big. Certainly the Heels will utilized nickel packages and PLEASE, this year Everette, bring the heat. You got 3 blazing LB’s.
On offense, it looks like Gaskins got moved and I’m surprised to see TJ Leifheit not on the 2 deep.
Harrelson is adequate as a return man. However, it would be GREAT to see someone break out and take one to the house early in the season. Would change the way teams punt/kickoff to the Heels.
Tate-like?
^Yes, IMO, the impact of Tate’s injury that year was exponetial. The Heels didn’t just lose a reciever as opposing teams were able to double on Nicks and were able to punt as deep as they wanted (instead of punting out of bounds).
It would be great to see someone emerge with similar threat, at least for the kicking game.
my first thought was:
245 lb Ryan Houston running behind almost 1600 lbs of BEEF.
3 guys that are 6’7″! i hope Renner can see over those monsters.
If the offensive line can hold up where a TE or H-B isn’t needed for blocking, I would love to see some three WR packages with Jones, Highsmith, and Boyd all on the field at the same time. Highsmith and Boyd have shown the ability to stretch the field and it could make life a lot easier on Renner. In a package like that, you’d have to respect Highsmith and Boyd’s speed while covering Jones, which means the TE would be getting a ton of action.
One thing I noticed about the depth chart is that with three juniors, a sophmore, and one senior is that they should be in great shape for next year, provided everyone stays healthy.
Also, the RB position freaks me out. Houston was banged up and missed last year, and Blue and Bernard are both coming off of knee injuries.
Finally, great to see Ramsey back on the depth chart. Glad he’s back and pissed to the point where he has something to prove.
