The very beginning of the video is quite frankly enough to bring any Tar Heel fan to tears or close to it. Dean Smith looks so frail and the outpouring of applause from the crowd is incredible. Roy’s speech was everything you would expect and while he has an ego as big as any coach out there, his persistent deference and credit to Dean Smith for a majority of his success is impressive. Roy closed the speech by saying:
“I can say representing North Carolina basketball and its family, ‘Coach Smith, I love you,’
The News & Observer has an extensive write-up of the event and a photo gallery.
Well Said Roy
The photo gallery awesome. How cool must it have been to actually be there? We really are so lucky to have had so many great coaches in the ACC. And its always wonderful to see Coach Smith again.
whew, that was a little tough to watch. goosebumps and tears.
Awesome to see Coach Smith out but sad to see him so feeble. He wasn’t even able to be out for the whole ceremony. It’s like seeing someone in your family going down hill. My heart and prayers go out to the Smith family.
I’ve never seen a coach so committed to his players as people. He’s an amazing person.
It gets us all eventually, but it’s very, very hard to watch it make such inroads on a man of singular strength and dignity.
I think it’s time to RENAME this award to the Dean Smith Sportsmanship Award.
I can NOT fathom anyone thinking coach K is a candidate for any sportsmanship award.
