We have artist’s renditions on how the court will be setup for UNC’s November 11th, 2011 game versus Michigan St. on the deck of an aircraft carrier in San Diego.
For obvious reasons, organizers won’t know until much closer to the Nov. 11 game which aircraft carrier will serve as host. It probably will be the USS Ronald Reagan or the USS Carl Vinson, said Whalen, who’s spent time in San Diego meeting with Navy officials.
A court and stadium seating for about 7,000 fans will be set up on the flight deck. In case of rain, the game will be moved below to the hangar deck, with bleacher seating for the fans.
Each school will get 750 tickets, 400 will go to coaches participating in a clinic and 1,000 will go to the Morale Entertainment Foundation and its partners: the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Wounded Warrior Project and the San Diego Air & Space Museum.
Obviously seeing a visual on how this will work helps. My primary concern with playing basketball on the deck of an aircraft carrier docked in a coastal city was the wind which can be pretty persistent. It appears there will be enough structure surrounding the court to take the wind out of play. Of course maybe that’s the real reason for the campus pickup games on outdoor courts. No, just kidding.
It should be an interesting game given UNC’s history of abusing Michigan St. and the fact his is one of a possible three tough non-conference games away from Chapel Hill. UNC plays at Kentucky in 2011-12 and will likely draw Ohio St. in Columbus for the ACC-Big 10/11/12 Challenge.
Actually, I’m pretty sure the ACC-BigTen game will be in Chapel Hill. I’m pretty sure it alternates with home and away. Considering we played at Illinois last year, this year’s challenge will be at the DES Center.
Not necessarily true. UNC played at home in 2005-06 and 2006-07 then went on the road for 2007-08 and 2008-09. I heard at one point Ohio St was told they would get a home game for ACC/B10 and chances are it will be UNC. In fact, I question the sanity of the people running it if they don’t match UNC and OSU up. That would be a 1 vs 2/3 game.
I question those who scheduled a game on a floating aircraft carrier.
Link confirming OSU as a home team in 2011 challenge:
http://www.bigten.org/blog/2011/04/mbb-big-ten-announces-home-and-away-designations-for-big-tenacc-challenge.html
So UNC has nonconf games are against OSU and KY both @ their places, while dook will play all their games at home or in NJ against “the school of the blind…
if ESPN gives OSU to dook, i’m going to be pissed.
i heard a report days ago that ALL seats for 11/11/11 were for military personnel. guess thats changed.
SO glad its on flight deck. its definitely big enough, and makes for great tv. a shame they cant throw the ball in the ocean from the court, tho.
Rasheed Wallace sighting in Durham, by the way.
I don’t have confirmation of on the OSU game but I would be shocked if they did not go for that game. It would be like the one in 2007 in Chapel Hill. According to IC we know this about the schedule which will be released in August:
@ UK
@ UNC-Asheville
vs Long Beach St.
vs SCAR at Las Vegas Invit.
vs UNLV or USC at LVI
vs Mich. St in San Diego
ACC-B10 Challenge probably vs Ohio St.

I have read that Dook will play OSU in Columbus. When I have a link, I will post it. Could be speculation, who knows? We would get either Purdue or Wisconsin.
I want to see the Heels in Columbus.
Well, if you’ve heard different, then that more than I got; mine was strictly based on back and forth theory. If we play on the road however, does this really mean that the best team we play at home in the non-conference will be Long Beach State? With a team this loaded, having a marquee home game would be a nice thing, not just stealing brownies/cookies/other treats
- I know our defense is good, but I can confidently predict that, for the aircraft carrier game, MSU will not even be able to throw it in the ocean.
At least if the sides of the ship are built up tall enough.
- C’mon, guys. You know Dook ain’t playin’ OSU. That would mean Dook would have a tough game. There’s a better chance Kyle Singler will turn into a clean player.
I predict a win over MSU in the carrier game, as long as we play on the flight deck. Here’s my thinkin’:
Assuming that it’s true that it’s harder to shoot in a dome (and we won’t ever play under a bigger dome), and since any wind will affect outside shooting more than inside play… how can we — with our Ram-a-Jamma* front line — possibly lose?

There’s also the possibility that strong winds might actually improve our 3 point shooting…. :/
Indeed: Our Phi-Slamma-Jamma* front line will dominate on slick dimes from our Dime-a-Lima* backcourt, while out Shot-a-Lotta* wing players will drain the threes, and our Coach-a-Loacha* coach coaches the heck out of them all.
And then our Blog-a-Logger* blogger, THF, will lay down some truth.

maybe this is why theyve been playing all these games outdoors.
hmmmmm.
I think it is going to be AWESOME and I think there will be alot of great highlights from the game..
This drawing is a bit stunning, as I had never thought through what the aircraft carrier game setting was going to be (on the deck vs. inside, who knew?).
It’s like looking at a Carmen Miranda hat.
What’s next?
How bout these: (1) Play on top of a skyscraper, (2) play at bottom of very deep diamond mine, (3) play in air-filled, underwater dome, (4) play in water-filled, hovering dome, (5) play on the space-station, (6) play on moon, (7) play on insulated court while falling into face of Sun.
UNC basketball: “We are limited only by the bounds of our imagination. Anything is possible.”
We already play once a year in the seventh circle of hell.
^*rimshot* Boo-yah!
^^heck, yeah!! Moon Ball. 20 ft goals. anyone could enjoy slow motion high flying 1080 dunks with incredibly soft landings.
lets start a franchise now!
