A big night for three former UNC players as Bruce Carter, Marvin Austin and Greg Little all were taken in the NFL Draft’s second round.
In a bit of a surprise, Carter came off the board before Austin going 40th overall to the Dallas Cowboys. The wait was not too much longer for Austin who will join former teammate Hakeem Nicks in New York after being taken 52nd by the Giants. Cleveland selected Little 59th overall rounding out the evening for UNC picks.
The fourth through seventh rounds continue on Saturday with several Tar Heels including Quan Sturdivant still waiting to hear their name called. Sturdivant was thought to be a 2nd/3rd round choice but at this point will be a nice steal for anyone who takes him.
The NFL Draft resumes at noon today.
Rumor had been that the Broncos were going to take Austin in the second round, but they passed on him twice. Word last night was that, while they liked what they saw in his workout, they didn’t like what they heard in the interview. Attitude, work ethic, character etc.
All those NFL Players and Butch still couldn’t beat NC State or win more then 8 games? Isn’t time for him to start looking for some new coordinators?
the proof is in: john bunting, butch davis and roy williams are recruiting GODS.
TJ YATES TO HOUSTON IN 5th RD!
Why hasn’t Sturdivant been drafted yet?
Off topic….George Mason: What ARE you thinking??
Can somebody fill me in on Deunta Williams? Are teams that worried about his leg? I saw him in the first round in pre-season mock drafts. I can’t believe he’s fallen off the board entirely (with half a round to go).
so, i’ve been turning it on every once in awhile, and its like Groundhog Day. has Burney been Mel’s best available for the last 3 hours?? he was #10 at 12:15. its 7 hours later, Mel.
he may not even get drafted now.
when i see the same 10 available that long, it makes me think Mel isnt that bright.
Alex White pitching now.
gave up 2 solos. down 2-1.

well, he wont get the loss. Indians tied it. thats nice of them.
9 players drafted, but couldn’t crack the top 25 for more then one week this year. There can now be no doubt that we have the worst game day coaches in America. Butch needs to send Withers packing and tell Shoop that he is on a short leash also.
While I have no love for the coordinators, arguably the three best players of that group did not play last season. IMO, you put Austin, Quinn and Little on the field plus everyone who missed games in the investigation UNC beats LSU, GT and NCSU or at worst goes 2-1 against that group and is in toss-up games with Miami and VT. And that is without getting into the losses due to injury. So, yes the coaching could be better but UNC did not get the full use of these nine draft picks which explains the 8-5 season.
I’ll just offer up the following and then I’ll let it go: those same nine guys who were drafted were on the team the previous season too and there was no NCAA Investigation keeping any of them on the sidelines and UNC still only won eight games, got beat by NC State, and failed to finish the season in the top 25.
Anyways you look at it its never a good thing when you have fewer wins then you do draft picks. That is a sure tell that something is wrong with your approach on game day … like being way too conservative with your play calling on defense (example: never blitzing) or utterly inexplicable with your play calling on offense (like not sticking with something that is working) or not making in game adjustments (to stop your coordinators from continuing to do things that are not working).
I’ll give Butch Davis credit. It’s exciting that for the first time since the Mack Brown era most weeks UNC is the more talented of the two teams on the field. But when is that talent going start translating to more wins?
