This has been making the round on the internet. If they actually made this, you know darn well you’d buy one. If UNC has any designs on winning the ACC regular season, I think Harrison Barnes going into Black Falcon mode from tip to final horn might go a long way towards getting the Heels there.
Comments if you have ‘em.

We truly are spoiled when we see all the faults of this team and they put up over 80 points against a very talented team.

I’m just wondering if we’d be doing this in the Big East — seems like a very down year in the ACC…
“Good warm up for Wed. Decent Game….let go of the gas way too early.”
I wouldn’t call this game a warmup, MD is ranked top 20 by KenPom. It’s a big win against a (deceptively) very good opponent. I do agree with the letting up on the gas issue. I’m sure Roy will ride them on that this week.
Good to see LMac get going tonight against a good opponent as well. Hopefully this one’s a confidence booster for him going forward. We need his shooting, it seems we won’t be getting it from Bullock this year.
FSU, here we come!
could see Maryland again in the ACCT. theyre around the 7 seed, currently.
Our most valuable players, in order: Zeller, Marshall, Henson, Barnes, Strickland, Knox, and McDonald (would be higher if he’d done more early in the season).
Sorry, that’s it. Bullock and Watts cannot play at this level, not this year. It’s too bad, because we could use one more body.
I have been against piling on Drew since his departure, so I’ll just leave it at this. The team is completly different, and obviously better, without him. Who knows how many more wins we would have today if Roy had started Marshall when it became obvious that was the correct move.
Barnes like every great scorer is a high volume shooter. He needs shots to get in rhythm. Which he had until the dreaded substitution pattern runied that.
So did Marshall take the assist/pg lead from Mr. Smith with his 10 dimes tonight?
My math says yes, 5.3 for Marshall to 5.2 for Smith, sweet, no scoring and assist title for Smith.
with marshall we would have won minnesota and vanderbilt……bank it.
ps can we get the name of the lady sitting behind gary williams
Somebody asked earlier who should be freshmen of the year - Barnes or KM. The way KM has awakened our offense after Larry Tryptophan Drew left I think you have to give it to him over Barnes … but I sure am grateful that we have both of them.
Does marshall make either the 2nd or 3rd team ACC
One thing about substitutions is that they can take the legs out from the opponent.
You’ve got 8 or 9 that can play and they’ve only got 6 or 7, why not?
^Thats a good question. Do they do it by position? Because I think you could make a very strong argument that he is the 2nd best PG in the ACC behind Shumpert (I consider Nolan a shooting guard)
Zeller, barnes, Henson, and k mar are equally important and the heels cant afford to lose any of them.
Way to go Heels!

so marylands pg goes off for near 30 and they lose
our pg does his thang with mega assist and we win. who is more valuable
If k mar leads the ACC in assist, that would be incredibly, but barnes has those game winners.
Henson however needs to be first team all ACC, and dpoy.
Marshall with a 20-assist lead in conference play.
A lot of his points were in garbage time.

I’m gonna call her “Mystery Raven”, until we know !!
Henson with 50 ACC blocks, 16 ahead of 2nd place.
Henson had an awesome game: rebounds, blocks, and (get this!) free throws !!!
Is this a sweet 16 team ??
Barnes #8 in scoring.
Zeller stretching his lead in FG%.
I’m gonna call her “Mystery Raven”, until we know !!
i am gonna call her the reason i went to CArolina and loved every dam$ minutes of it…….CAROLINA GIRLS
Heel To The End,
Are you getting your stats from theacc.com, or somewhere else ?
or are you just doing some quick math for everyone’s benefit ??
You really have to admire Gary Williams and Maryland. They never stopped plugging away. The Washington Post had an article today about how much their players admired UNC. Their rookie guard wanted to play for UNC and I hope we don’t see too much more of him. Most teams would have lost by 30 tonight. Maryland refused to give up.
Damn, we are tall!
just adding tonight’s totals to theacc.com, since they are slow.
everyone has played 14 games now.
scl11,
Your math is correct and someone should make sure ESPN knows because they love saying Smith is the ACC assists leader.
oh, and here’s what i most enjoyed from the game…Cliff Tucker was a nonfactor. tired of that guy.
Does anybody remember that show, “The A Team”?

the only way Smith has more assists, is in total. he has 1 more assist in 1 more game played.
Marshall leads in per game, and in ACC play.
Great win. UM is a tough out
I also feel bad for Bullock but he is hurting the team right now. Cut his minutes in half and give half to Barnes and the other half to LMac.
Too many shots for Barnes. You don’t often see a Carolina player shoot 23 times.
The top of the circle low post entry pass is frowned bc of the poor angle, unless the post is under the basket.
“I love it when a [team] comes together!”

????
Bullock only played 7 minutes, so Roy did cut him. But 8 shots…wow RB. Pass.
Anyone else think Williams 16 points and 19 boards for UM was one of the quietest dominating stat lines you’ll see? I thought he played a little soft too!
Gary Williams would be really dangerous if he would recruit.
how bout this…Marshall needs 14 more assists these last 2 games to have more than Ty did in 2009.
AND, that will also be more than Raymond had in 2005.
both had 102 ACC assists. Kendall on 89.

Roy said that Reggie hurt his knee in the first half, they tried him in the second, but he couldn’t play at the level they needed him to. At this point, I wonder if he might just be saying that to protect his player.
^That’s true. We could see him limping when he was going back to the bench a couple of times. He may have missed shots anyway, even if he wasn’t hampered, but he was definitely not 100%.
CotaFloata
At this point, I wonder if he might just be saying that to protect his player.

It could be a Roy-smokescreen (like we’ve seen earlier in the season!)
Is the knee Roy references the one that had surgery?
Does anybody know about the surgery Bullock had on his knee ?
I wonder why they didn’t redshirt him — I mean we’re at the end of the reg. season, and it’s still an issue ??
Great win! The seven-man rotation is now finalized. Marshall, Strickland, Barnes, Henson, and Zeller make a strong group of starters, with McDonald and Knox being solid first tier reserves. Bullock and Watts are numbers 8 and 9 in the rotation, and each will continue to see minor minutes.
22-6 overall record (after starting 4-3) and tied for 1st in the ACC with a 12-2 record. Sweet!
Assists are overrated. I don’t say that to diss Marshall, at all, but we all know he is not close to those two guys. Cota and Phelps were similar to Marshall, but Marshall is still a work in progress….
A month ago we were saying Bullock was better than Barnes, who, btw, did not shoot well, nor did the team in general.
Bullock will be fine.
as a deliverer of the ball to the right spot at the right time, i will say he IS close to those guys.
total player? no.
Oh, as a deliverer of the ball, Marshall is better than either Lawson or Felton…. Yes.
Good point, William. Same can be said about Strickland or MacDonald starting. I seem to remember that Dex had a good game against State just one game ago. Just be glad guys are picking up when others fall off. It’s the nature of a young team.
For the record, the refereeing was… odd. You definitely get a feel for a Hess-called game. Just very inconsistent with what is called when throughout on both sides. Sometimes bodies knock and nothing. Sometimes hand checks are called.
Zeller with 25 points in only 30 minutes. That is pretty damn good!
I will say this.
Marshall may be the most impressive player I have ever seen who averages less than five points a game.
Marshall would absolutely be right there with Cota’s freshman numbers if he had started all year. he’d probably have 200 assists with a minimum 4 games left, and probably at least 6.
I think he is better than Cota, although my mental impression of Cota is fading, which is probably correlated with my thinking Marshall is better…
“Bullock will be fine.”
After he lights up Duke or the ACCT, everyone will be up here saying how he should start for Strickland again. Mob is very fickle.
Strickland did have 8 assists and only 1 turnover, just saying, but evidently Buon and william have decided now that assists don’t count. If McDonald continues to shoot > 50% and drop 15 points off the bench, can someone explain to me why it is so important for him to start? I just don’t get it, especially with 2 games to play in the regular season. To me it sounds like some are just laying the ground work of a built in excuse in case UNC loses, so they can say told you so, wouldn’t happen if Roy started McDonald.
I think Assists and Turnovers are relevant, certainly, but they are not “hard” stats. That is the thing about statistics. The more you create, especially the subjective ones, the more you have to take them with a grain of salt.
Maryland plays a style that is similar to ours, which, when we lose is maddening, but often when we win against them, we tend to put up big numbers. Didn’t we beat them 89-87 or something like that back in 2005?
It is hard to dislike Maryland, aside from their rowdy fans. They really could have easily taken a 30 point pasting tonight. Their point guard lit us up and without even making a three, and word is, he was interested in UNC, lol.
i’m totally fine with the starters as is. we see what happens when Zeller, Barnes, maybe Marshall go out…there’s a run by the other team.
gotta have some bench scoring.
Our shooting was still lamentable, but we mad almost 80 percent from the line. Henson hit 4-4!
we are #10 RPI.
of course, dook still up there at #5 despite the 2nd worst SOS in the top 20. we see how that matters.
This is really one game where I couldn’t care less about shooting percentages or who took too many shots, or whatever. The Heels matched every bit of energy Maryland threw at them, and more, and made the plays. And they answered every single time the Terps cut into the lead. Well done.
This was a very high possession game which I really feel played into UNC’s hand more than Maryland’s…with Marshall running the show I imagine most teams would give pause to whether they really want to get in this kind of game with the Heels.
I loved the play of Williams (man I couldn’t believe it when I looked up at the big screens, late, and saw he had 19 boards…when did he get all of those?) and Stoglin, Stoglin especially, but you just can’t get it done with two players. (Ask Duke)
I really like what I saw tonight, and feel a helluva lot better about traveling to Tallahassee on Wed.
sc11 f McDonald continues to shoot > 50% and drop 15 points off the bench, can someone explain to me why it is so important for him to start? I just don’t get it,
_______________________________
because I am so tired of seeing km drive create space and feed a shooting guard who wont shoot. give butta the final piece of the puzzle to unleash this offense!!!! free butta free butta free butta
“because I am so tired of seeing km drive create space and feed a shooting guard who wont shoot.”
So what was McDonalds 15pts off the bench a mirage? How does having him shooting them in the first 5min of each half instead of the 2nd 5min change any of that? Do you just stop watching after the first 5?
A really exciting thing about this team is their intelligent intensity. Barnes and Marshall especially are disruptive and often do this best when they have made an offensive mistake.
Any time Maryland and plenty of other teams have made a run, it is defense that usually shuts it down.
That can be a great strength. It is thusfar.
As for me, I’m fine with LMac not starting but getting 20 minutes, like tonight.
But thus isn’t “fickle” on Bullock. He’s shot horrible for multiple weeks now and Roy has given him plenty of chances to shoot his way out of it. I think he will be a big-time scorer for Carolina during his career and also suspect he has a hidden, nagging injury, but there can’t be a reasonable argument made for him to get much more than the 7 minutes he played tonight. Now, if he starts knocking down some shits, that should change.
” Now, if he starts knocking down some shits, that should change.”
I’ll settle for him just knocking down some shots.
Larry S -
At this point, I’d settle for his getting anything through any round space, without being too particular about the thing or the space.
MakeItWayne22 -
This is the reasoning of my rank order:
Zeller-the anchor
Marshall-the glue
Henson-the mayor
Barnes-the clutch
Strickland-the speed
Knox-the muscle
McDonald-the points
I guess my overall impression of the game is two-fold. First, is it ever a pleasure to have a point guard who knows what he’s doing. Second, for the first time in a long time, I feel like Carolina basketball is back. We played with speed, determination, excitement and (dare I say it) joy.
Sometimes last year, you just wanted to turn it off and walk away. The feeling of this team is 180 degrees different.
The team chemistry is good right now; I think Strickland starting with LMac off the bench is a good combination, each player feels comfortable with his role, and the team is clicking. I see no reason to change that.
What is troubling, however, is the lousy shooting of Bullock and the non-existent play of Watts. If any of our starters (or even top 7 players, which would be the starting 5 plus Knox and LMac) is injured, the backups are not nearly at the same level and this could be a problem.
Also, some people are saying Marshall is not at the level of Cota and Lawson; well now, each team is different, and it is clear that all three of these fine point guards made the team they were on much better. It is clear that the scoring ability Lawson and to a lesser extent Cota gave them some extra clout, but Marshall has taken a team that was stuttering and stammering and practically willed them to cohesion. As a freshman. I think he deserves some extra fan points for that.
