New Defensive Line Coach Hired…Again

UNC officially announced the hiring of former LSU special teams coach Joe Robinson as the Tar Heels’ defensive line coach.

The University of North Carolina has hired Joe Robinson as its defensive line coach. Robinson joins the Tar Heels after serving the last three seasons as the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at LSU.

“Joe is a tremendous defensive line coach who has a well rounded resume with experience at several different positions,” said UNC head coach Butch Davis. “We had several outstanding candidates for the position and Joe was the best fit for our staff and players.”

Robinson previously worked with UNC defensive coordinator Everett Withers at Southern Mississippi in the early 1990s.

While Robinson’s focus will be on the defensive line, tapping some of his special team coaching experience might prove beneficial as well. LSU’s special teams were very good whereas UNC’s was something we would rather not talk about ever again. Other than that, not much is known about Robinson and quite frankly we do not spend much time thinking about the specific position coaches anyway. I do think having a coach who has worked with you defensive coordinator in the past helps the learning curve. I also like the idea of bringing in an assistant coach from the SEC who understands what elite winning football is like.

What is unclear at this point is whether Robinson has actually signed a contract yet. Hopefully he has or will as soon as possible, not so much for our sake or the sake of the UNC football program. My concern is for NC State fans. They seemed particularly concerned and agitated that Brian Baker never signed a contract before leaving a month later. I would hate for them to undergo any stress of Robinson’s status, especially given they are about to go through yet another basketball coaching search.
